02/21/2011: "Wacky Weather"

Due to the way that weather works, we are prone to some pretty extreme variations in our weather up here. For example, last week, we had clear skies. Clear skies mean nothing to hold in the heat, so very cold temperatures. When the temp gets below about -30F, ice fog forms.

In the top picture notice how the smoke in the background seems to go up, then sharp right, instead of slanting gracefully? Well, that's not because there's a layer of wind, that's due to the inversion. You know how heat rises and cold sinks? That's exactly what happens, and why it gets so flipping cold here - we're in a bit of a valley. So the cold air settles here. Depending on the day, there is an elevation where you can feel the temperature suddenly get warmer/colder as you move up or down. That smoke in the picture has hit that elevation, and the sudden change in temperature acts almost like a ceiling - the smoke can't rise any more, so it moves to the side. On not-so-inversioney days, the smoke rises like normal.

And this was your science lesson for the day.

Over the weekend clouds rolled in, so temperatures have been relatively warm. Woke up this morning to 20 above. And a foot of fresh snow. Should make tomorrow's PT interesting, as we're supposed to be snowshoeing. A foot of fresh snow that doesn't really stick like normal snow, and people who aren't used to wearing snowshoes should make this quite entertaining. :)

I've also been working on some things I've wanted to get done around here, mostly organization type stuff. To include finally getting around to making a holder for my crochet hooks:

Now I just need one for my DPNs and cable needles that I just bought.

Mom:
If the gloves smell good, they've probably just soaked up all the candles I burn. The recipe for the oatmeal cookies is the one that is under the lid of Quaker Oatmeal, except replacing 1/2c flour w/ 1/2c oatmeal, because otherwise they taste like flour. Then adding a random quantity of walnuts and craisins. Nummy.

So, that was a heck of a race yesterday, and the rookie winning it! I expected all the wrecks, didn't quite expect that though.

Those pictures of the ice fog look so eerie! Reminds me of some of those movies on sci-fi.
I like the crochet hook holder. What kind of fabric did you line it with? Flannel or something soft like that?
Looks nice.
I found the cookie recipe on the oatmeal lid. I'll still let you make them and I'll watch, how's that?

Did you really like the 2by 2 racing? I don't think it is as good as it used to be in the draft. I know they are going faster but they always slow them down to the same speeds with the restricter plates that they have to use. I think the truck races were better than the cup races were. Today I am going to watch the nationwide cars.
