I gots stuff!!

Lots and lots of stuff.

So far, I've managed to somewhat sort out the kitchen, get the TV set up, and set up my bed.

Unfortunately, I had to go through most of the non-book boxes to find my bedding, because my bedding and pillows ended up scattered through a whole bunch of boxes. *sigh*

Its not even really late, but my brain is toast, so I'm gonna go stare at the TV for a while. Yay couch!

Stitcheries

I finished working on the piece of doodle embroidery I was doing a while back, just never took a picture of it. So, here it is:

The vast majority is stem stitch, some straight / seed stitches in places, a touch of satin stitch on the bee, and french knots in the centers of some of the flowers. Oh, and the rose-looking flower is split stitch. I think it turned out pretty decent, especially just being a doodle.

And I had started on another piece. This one I grabbed the design from online, printed it out, and traced it onto the fabric. Its a Buddhist-type lotus.

This one is almost entirely split stitch. An interesting choice for filling in large areas, I know, but it is a little more forgiving than satin stitch - I don't have to get everything *perfectly* even for it to look good, and it follows the curves of the petals a little better, instead of just having to pick a direction. And I think it gives an interesting texture. Got the idea out of a book.

I had plenty of time to work on this yesterday, since I had to supervise one of the people in my company who had to do some extra duty. So I had to sit around for about 7 hours while he did assorted cleaning. Then I got relieved, and someone else got to watch him for another 7 hours. Hopefully I won't have to do that again in the near future.

This morning I hung out at the local Barnes & Noble working on it, sitting by the fireplace, and sipping on a green tea latte. (So I like foo-foo drinks, what of it?) Beats the heck out of trying to work on it at home, seeing as I have no chairs. In fact, sitting cross-legged in front of the computer is making my legs fall asleep. I hate having bad circulation to the legs/feet.

Speaking of home, part of my cable package was a phone line. Yes, I actually have a plain, old-fashioned, house phone. Which, of course, meant that I had to go out and buy a phone. 907-374-6859 for those interested. (I have a sticky-note on the phone with my number)

While I was at the bookstore, I picked up a book on Feng Shui. Figured it couldn't hurt to try arranging this place as good as possible from the get-go, right? Especially since the movers have to place everything - my couch is heavy, and it would take me a very long time to move it. Should be interesting to see what I can actually manage. And how long it takes me to get settled in. In any case, I can not wait to sleep in my nice, comfy bed... *feels sleepy just thinking about it*

I gots a home (really!)

So, my apartment was ready sooner than originally expected, so I got to move in today!

Mind you, that means I now have a really nice, empty floor, but its mine! I'll get to fill it up on Monday. And then try and figure out all of those little things that you need. For example, before I could do much of anything, I had to dig out the roll of toilet paper that I still had from New York (unused). Then I had to get a shower curtain. I'm gonna need a trash can here shortly... and I can actually think about putting stuff on the walls - and I don't even have to patch up nail holes when I leave, as long as I don't leave any massive holes.

And, the management had the cable already hooked up, so all I had to do was go down to the cable co's shop and pick up my converter and cable modem, and I was online! Granted, I won't have a TV until Monday, but Internet is way more important anyway. :)

Ready for pictures yet? Of course! (just ignore my piles of stuff, I haven't had a chance to get organized)

So, here's the kitchen. Doesn't seem too bad for cabinet space, linoleum (is that how its spelled?) seems a tad bubbly in spots, but I'll be ok.

Then we've got the living room. Patio doors open out onto a balcony. I'm on the second floor, overlooking the parking lot.

View from the entrance towards the kitchen. Little breakfast bar area, kinda nice. I'm def gonna have to get a bunch of rugs since the entrance is carpeted - don't want snow and slush and much getting ground into the carpet.

Another view from entranceway. The closet on the left is your basic closet, the one on the right by the kitchen is a pantry. Yes, I have a pantry. Kinda scary. Just left of the living room (not that you can really see it) is the entrance to the bedroom.

Bathroom. Very important. And you can see the aforementioned toilet paper and shower curtain.

Ummm... dressing room? Another sink, connects bathroom and bedroom, and has the main closet (on the right where you can't see).

The closet. nice and big - plenty of room to hide stuff. :)

And the bedroom. Air mattress on loan from the post loan closet.

And thus, with a mess all over the place, it is time for me to crawl into my inflatable bed. However, I will leave you with one last bit of information:

I hate flu vaccine day

This morning I had to get my annual flu vaccine, in nasal mist form. The shots never gave me any issues, the nasal mist knocks me on my butt. I just want to crawl under a rock for a week or so right now. Lucky this is a holiday weekend (Columbus Day) so as long as I can survive tomorrow, I should be OK. This doesn't usually last more than a day, too, so let's keep our fingers crossed. Ah, the joys of having your health dictated to you.

While we were getting our vaccines, we were informed that we would be getting H1N1 vaccine, but we have to wait at least 30 days after this vaccination. And, I'm sure, more supplies to get up here - I heard on the radio that there are about 4000 doses up here right now, which would not cover a fraction of the population on this base. So I'm not sure how our supply of vaccine affects the civilian supply.

I know there was something else... At least I think I thought I had something else... Brain's a tad fuzzy right now.

%*&(* flu vaccine.

Almost Forgot...

So I was watching Ghost Hunters Wednesday night and perked up when I heard them say they were going to the Thousand Islands Region. That's the neck of the woods I just came from! So, I just HAD to find out what town there were going to, and if I had been there.

Sure enough, during this episode they were in Alexandria Bay (aka Abay or A-bay or other such), which is about a half hour north of where I was at, and a town that I have been through. Looked like it was filmed during the summer.. so that would have been while I was still there, kindof surprised I didn't hear anything about it, especially since I worked w/ a couple of people who lived in that town. You'd think that a film crew, complete with Meatloaf, in a summer tourist town would have had people talking. *shrug*

And, for those of you wondering, the Thousand Islands region is where Thousand Island dressing origiated.

My eyeballs work again!

So, the eyeball-numbing work is over, and I can actually stand to sit at the computer for more than 5 minutes. Not that much has happened, but I can talk a bit more about some of what happened before.

Last weekend there was actually some snow to speak of.

Granted, it melted a couple hours later, but it was still snow to speak of. Looks like we might get some more of the stuff next week, if not this weekend. Of course, the forecast currently has the stuff mixed in with rain, so this should be interesting.

In my down time (before I burned out my eyeballs) I've been playing around a little bit with embroidery - got inspired by Mom when I was home, especially since its a craft I haven't done much with. And since its relatively easy to be a bit more creative with it; I just drew with a pencil on a piece of fabric and started going at it!

I guess you could call the method "doodle embroidery" (got the idea from a book with similar name, though I didn't actually buy the book - I might though, just to get more ideas). Like I said, I just drew with a pencil on the fabric (making sure that the pencil will easily wash out) and have been playing with it. You might be able to call it kindof candlewicking-ish? I'm just taking a couple of stitches, and making it up as I go along.

I'm thinking of taking some embroidered blocks and turning them into a quilt or some such. Any other ideas?
